Helen Ortego Reed

VILLE PLATTE – It is with great sadness that the family of Helen “Jean” Pitre Ortego Reed announces her passing on Sunday, May 22, 2022 in Ville Platte at the age of 87.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Ville Platte at 2:30 PM.  Burial will follow in the Gates of Heaven Cemetery.  Father Tom Voorhies, Pastor of Sacred Heart will be celebrant of the Mass and conduct funeral services.

Helen “Jean” Pitre was born on September 27, 1934 in Grand Prairie, Louisiana to Howard L. “Cayou” and Regina McDaniel Pitre.  Jean loved to travel; she traveled across most of the United States.  Jean worked as a secretary for Farm Bureau Insurance most of her adult life.  Later in life, she took up the sport of golf and played at the Ville Platte Country Club where she was a member.  Jean’s greatest joy in life was that of spending time with and taking care of her family.  She will be greatly missed and her memory will live on in their hearts forever.

Jean is survived by two daughters, Ann Greene and husband, Dr. Bobby Greene and Kay Fontenot and husband, Michael Dess; one son, Jody Ortego and Samantha; six grandchildren, Tiffany Tate Alfred and husband, Jacob, Michelle West and husband, Bo, Paul Greene and wife, Heather, Jordan Ortego and wife, Jill, Sadie Ortego, and Emily Ortego; and 10 great grandchildren, Victoria, Beckett, Austin, Andrew, Kylie, Grayson, Wren, Emmie, Remi, and Ellie.  Jean is also survived by her two brothers, John Burke “Cayou” Pitre and wife Cindy and Charles Pitre; sister, Dee Pitre Dunn and husband, Kenneth; sisters in law, Bess Ortego Fontenot, JoAnn Ortego Christ and Dot Ortego; brother in law, Utley Wyble, and numerous nieces and nephews. Also left behind to cherish her memory are the members of her Reed family: Karen R. Doummit, David, Dennis, Dale, Richard, and Stephen Reed and their families.

Jean is preceded in death by her parents, Howard L. “Cayou” and Regina McDaniel Pitre; first husband, Joseph David “JD” Ortego; and second husband, Wade Hampton Reed.

At the request of the family, visitation will be held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 beginning at 12:30 PM until time of service.  A rosary will be prayed in her honor Tuesday at 1:30 PM.

The family would like to send out special thanks to Fr. Tom Voorhies, Fr. Andrew Killeen, the staff of Heritage Manor Nursing Home of Ville Platte, and friend and caregiver, Betty Richard.
